Rolex Submariner ‘Big Crown’ Ref. 6538
Maunder Watch Co are very pleased to offer this incredible Rolex Submariner ‘Big Crown’ Ref. 6538.
Forever immortalized by Sean Connery in 1960s Bond films, the Rolex Submariner 6538 has achieved mythical status among watch collectors and examples such as this very rarely come up for public sale.
Firstly, lets talk about the absolutely showstopping original super glossy gilt 2 line Swiss only dial. This really has to been seen in person to appreciate the condition along with the effects of a fully mirror finish dial on the wrist. This dial surface in combination with the creamy radium hour markers, original matching radium gilt hands is what initially grabbed our attention… but it certainly does not stop there with this watch.
One of the rarest components to this watch is the original ‘red triangle’ hash insert which has perfectly patinated without obtaining any eye catching scratches, this insert sits in its original bezel and for the cherry on the cake, this retains its radium pip.
The sharp case displays broad shoulders, wonderful chamfers, original crisp caseback with no deep scratches or dents.
This case serial is 449xxx which dates this watch to 1959. By 1958/59 the Geiger count lowers significantly which helps preserve the incredible dials from this serial range. On earlier variations the dials often have their surface layer burnt over time leaving a pitted, matte finish.
The original rivet link bracelet on this watch retains its 7206 stamped link, 80 end links, period correct and rarely seen ‘Big Logo’ clasp all in great condition.
Finally, where better to conclude the details on this watch than its nickname… ‘The Big Crown’ this watch displays its original and iconic Brevet big crown, as you may have guessed from the rest of this watch, this is also in phenomenal condition.
