Rolex Explorer I 1016
Out of stock
Maunder Watch Co have for sale a Rolex Explorer 1 Ref 1016. This 36 mm, slim case is made of stainless steel and in our opinion is one of the most versatile vintage timepieces. It combines a sports look and dress wristwatch proportions while remaining simply understated. The Rolex explorer 1 is highly respected among wristwatch collectors and finding good examples is becoming a lot harder. This example is dated 1986 and is presented fully serviced.
The Rolex Explorer 1016, of all of the brand’s sport watches, has always been the under watch in the brand’s lineup. Compared to heavyweights such as the Submariner, GMT, and Daytona, the Explorer has always ranked as understated, underappreciated, underexposed, and, one could argue, “under-updated”. Released in 1963, the 1016 basically soldiered on through 1989 (some say 1990) with very few updates aside from a move away from gilt to matte dial, a change from non-hacking 1560 to hacking 1570 movement. The Explorer is most famous for its inclusion on the first summiting of Mount Everest in 1953. Furthermore, the various models released until the Rolex Explorer 1016 debuted in 1963 are well documented on many sites.
As you can see by the images the dial is absolutely stunning and this watch comes complete with it’s original box and papers and fantastic set of miscellaneous documents such as early repair receipts dated 1991 and visa card receipts. It truly is a wonderful set.
All of our watches have undergone a thorough inspection of water resistance, accuracy, functionality and are authenticated by our specialist watch makers.
