Cartier is commonly known as a jeweler however they have been producing wristwatches for longer than many of the well known watchmakers. Louis Cartier was the creator of the first mans watch in 1904. He was commissioned by his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont to make a watch suitable for harsh and unforgiving aviation flights. And the Santos was born. Louis Cartier with the help of Edmond Jeager Launched the Santos for sale to the public in 1911. The early men’s watches were hand made in France by Cartier but with Jeager movements.
In 1917 the “Tank” wristwatch was introduced, during world war one. Louis Cartier got his inspiration from the new American invention the Tank. So he created a watch that was strong-featured but beautiful. The watch became an instant classic and is popular to this day.
